The Native Americans viewed mother earth as a spiritual being. She was responsible for all life. To the people of the plains the buffalo was the representation of the tie between humans and the Earth. The earth provided the buffalo as the subsistence for the Native Americans. Past Lodge Chief Jon Pugmire and Adviser Jeff Barnes recognized that members of the order who have devoted year after year of their time give consistency to the program and assist in its growth. They formulated an award that would give recognition to arrowmen who had given years of active service to the Order of the Arrow. This new Award, “The Spirit of the Earth” award is given to those who have been consistent in giving service to the Order of the Arrow for over 20 years. The majority of their service being devoted to the program within our council or the councils that became Trapper Trails.

The award, symbolizing the importance of Mother Earth is a buffalo statue and a framed certificate.
This award is not necessarily given every year.
